As some of you might have noticed, I didn’t post Part 2 of the Pharisees for Bite-Sized Bible Dictionary last week as I had hoped. I’m reassessing and extending the scheduling of my content during this time which will allow more time for me to focus and provide the quality of content that I want to produce and share with you. Life has a way of telling us to slow down and yet to persist in what we’re doing. God's providence and wisdom orchestrates these things for our good. I appreciate you bearing with me in this regard. Let’s continue to learn and critically reflect on the New Testament in New Testament Nexus!
As I share with you what I’m learning and engaging with, please feel free to participate by restacking, sharing, liking, leaving comments, and telling me what you think about my content!
Here’s what’s on the menu in the coming weeks:
Who Were the Pharisees? (Part 2)
What do the works of Josephus tell us about the Pharisees? How did he view the beliefs and practices of this group? Does his account match that found in the Gospels?
History of the Jews (Part 2): The Reign of Herod the Great
Who was Herod the Great? What do we know about his reign? What is he known for? What role does he play in the Gospels?
The Fourth Gospel and History
Why is the Gospel of John so different than the Syntopics? Is the Gospel of John trying to give a “historical Jesus”? Should we think about John the gospel writer as writing history? Or, is he just giving us a purely theologically constructed Jesus?
Biblical Philosophy
If you’re intrigued already, let’s have fun talking about how “[t]he biblical tradition is an intellectual tradition,” as argued by Dr. Dru Johson in his book Biblical Philosophy: A Hebraic Approach to the New and Old Testaments (Cambridge University Press, 2021).
Be prepared for bonus uploads because there’s always something to talk about.
